SEO involves the use of a few fairly simple techniques to get your website noticed by the search engines. It may sound slightly daunting at first, but it's really not that hard after you get your head around a few basic concepts. There are different levels of SEO, and there are even companies specialising in nothing else. But if you're just starting your internet business then getting a grasp of the basics will help you to get your website off the ground.

So where to start? You've seen the word everywhere, but what steps can you actually take today to start optimising your internet business website? Here are the three main areas of SEO that you can start to work on straight away. Get started with these, incorporate them into your business plan, and you should start to see some early results.

Keywords

Keywords are what people use to find your website. If you have a website on how to grow great vegetables, then your keywords might be 'vegetables', 'grow', 'seeds' etc. Keywords are not always one word, and you can also incorporate keyword phrases, such as 'growing vegetables'.

How do you find the best keywords? Use the Google keyword tool. Here you can search for the keywords with the most volume of searches made on them and then incorporate these into your copy in a natural way. Don't force them, and don't cram them in too many times. The copy has to flow naturally in order to have the right effect on the readers.

Back-Links

Back-links are links to your website from other sites. It takes time and effort to build up the links, but it is something you can start doing right now. Search engines love back-links, and the more links you get, the higher you will rise in the search engine rankings. There are hundreds of ways to get good links - other websites with similar content, industry blogs and sending out articles to be used as content are just a few. Each is an art unto itself and will take practice, but that's why you should start early.

Meta Tags

Meta tags are one of the easiest ways to increase your SEO efforts with very little effort. Okay, there is some debate as to how useful they actually are, but they don't take long to set up and if they just help a bit then that's better than not at all.

Meta tags consist of the meta title (the name of the page that appears in the search engine results), the meta description (the description that goes under it) and meta keywords (the keywords that are most specific to each page). Of course, creating powerful titles that attract attention and choosing the right keywords takes skill and practice, but at least you now know where to start.

So there you are, three crucial elements of basic SEO to get you started in your online business. As you keep working at these you will start to learn more about how to improve your SEO efforts.
