How to Get Referrals for Your PTC Sites

The quickest way to make money from PTC programs is to have a bundle of quality referrals. In fact, most of your earnings will come from your referrals. What do we mean by quality referrals? They are your referrals who always click their ads. Referrals are also human, and human can be lazy sometimes. If they don’t click you can’t earn from them, as simple as that.

As easy as it may sound, it is one of the biggest challenge for most PTC users especially for newbies. Looking for referrals requires a lot of effort; but once you’ve done it correctly, all your hard work will payback as your earnings will increase when your downline starts building.

There are many ways to build a huge referral base; but you have to be patient, you have to be honest, and you have to believe in the program you're inviting others to join. Always make sure that you’re not telling them to join scam sites. In a way, credibility also helps make or break your efforts to get referrals.

Here are some popular and effective ways which you could use to get referrals:

1) Make a website or blog about PTC.

This is one of the most challenging but exceptionally reliable means of acquiring referrals. Write an article about your experiences with PTCs, your recommendations, or some tips that you could share to them. Then, use this opportunity to place your referral links or banners in the website you made. It works well because you only have to write it once but people looking for ways to earn online will see it again and again.

There are a lot of free blog or website platforms out there that are easy to setup which you could use to achieve this. You could start a blogspot blog (or maybe wordpress) like this one, start making squidoo lens, or maybe write for hubpages.

Making websites is challenging because often times you have to sell your ideas to your audience or visitors in an instant to get them into action. You have to be able to capture their attention and give them the information that they need. One helpful tip that I could share to you in this regard is to make catchy titles. “Lists” and “how to” titles are some of the best examples. The more informative and convincing your blog / website is, the more probability of it generating referrals for you. Be sure to research and use keywords to help your search engine presence.

2) Purchase / rent referrals.

Purchasing un-referred members from PTC sites is a common practice. There are many PTC members who either did not sign up under anyone, or their referrer closed their account. These members then go on sale. You can buy or rent them for a price, usually ranging from $0.30-$2 per referral. These referrals usually expire after a month. After that, either you renew your rent so you could earn from them for another month; or they go on sale again. In most cases, you will only get members that have been active recently.

This method of gaining referrals is the easiest. If you have the capital, you can gain a lot of referrals in a short time. There is huge earning potential. As your downline grows, your earnings grow rapidly.

There is only one condition. Most sites will not guarantee that the members you buy will be active after you purchase them. You may pay for 50 referrals only to see a week later that 10 of them rarely or never click. So, basically this is an "at your own risk" method of getting referrals.

Another important note: You should not purchase referrals from a site that you do not completely trust. There is word spreading around the PTC community that some scam sites are selling bots (automated clickers) as referrals. If this happens, the bot will either click minimally or stop altogether. You should always be careful when investing your own money in a PTC site.

Also, you should do the math. When you purchase referrals, you should be able to make your money back before your referrals expire. Take into account how much you make off of referrals as well as how many ads the site has each day.

3) Be active in forums.

There are some forums about making money on the internet where you can share your knowledge and ideas about making money online through PTCs. Be active, involved and interested. Share your opportunity when appropriate and invite people to PM or email you for the link and more information. If you could offer them great help, they will trust you and the site you're recommending more.

You can also get direct referrals in other forums by editing your signature. If the forum rules allow, you can add a banner or a referral link about the PTC sites you are in on your signature and then every time you post a new message, everyone will see your links.

4) Participate in Referral Exchanges.

Referral exchanges occur in forums where you can trade referrals. What this means is that someone will sign up as your referral for a site you belong to if you sign up for one of theirs. For example, if you want to get referral for PalmBux, then you have to start a new thread in a forum like "I need Referral for PalmBux". Any one who hasn’t joined PalmBux yet, will reply to your thread. In exchange for his / her participation, he / she will provide link of his / her PTC site, which you should join also.

This method works very well because chances are; you will be getting a very active referral to make you money. The reason is because that person wants you to be active in their program, so they should be active in yours also. As long as you stay active they will too.

The drawback to this method is that you will probably want to set a limit to the number of sites you will join. You don't want to sign up for so many sites that you cannot stay active in all of them. So, in this way, there is a limit to how often you can do this.

5) Join Traffic Exchange Sites and Downline Builder Sites.

Actually, I haven’t tried these personally but I’m getting a lot of buzz about these in PTC communities. The idea behind traffic exchange sites is to surf other people’s sites to earn credits which you’ll use to advertise your site for other people to surf and earn credits as well. In short, you get people to view your site, or referral link, in exchange for viewing their site or referral links too. “I see yours, you see mine”; get the idea?

I don’t think spending your hard earned credits on advertising your referral link or page for other people to surf is a good idea to gain referrals. You’ll just be wasting time as more people will just view your ad then jump to the next ad since they’re only after earning credits to get their own agendas pushed through using traffic.

The only way I see this method working is for you to build a page where you could advertise or sell your referral link or links much better than just showing the signup page for your PTC. As you will see when you start surfing, you only have a brief moment to capture the viewers’ attention and get them to visit your site and sign up. If you don't, they will surf right past your page. So, you need a page that will load fast and get the surfer to click. If you’ve made a blog or website about PTCs already; maybe you can use it instead of your individual referral links.

Regarding downline builders, it also works based on credit system. You earn credits through clicking or signing up programs, which you’ll spend on either getting others to view your program (through clicking), or getting others sign-up to your program. I believe you earn more from sign-ups as compared to clicks. The same goes for making people sign-up under you which will cost more as compared to just having them view your stuff.

In both methods, there’s a great chance that you’ll be acquiring lots of referrals. The only problem is there’s more potential for them to be inactive simply because they became a referral as a cost or side effect of their quest to achieve something else and not as their main goal or as a means to achieve their end.

6) Advertise on PTC sites.

It might not be new to you that most of PTC sites’ advertisers are their members as well. How many times have you seen PTC sites and their login pages whenever you click ads in one of your PTCs? These are usually the handwork of PTC members who wish to get referrals for their PTC site and rarely from the owner of the PTC site itself. Guess what? You can also use this method to advertise your stuff. Instead of cashing out your earnings, you can spend it on advertising instead.

This can be an effective tool, especially for new PTC sites. If you are using an old PTC site to advertise another old PTC site, everyone who clicks would most likely already be a member of that site. However, if you advertise a hot new PTC with few members, you can really benefit from this method.

Additionally, you could use the same method as the one stated in traffic exchange sites. Advertise your “highly sellable” page filled with your PTC referral links, or maybe your own blog or website about PTCs that also contains your referral links.

7) Tell your family and friends.

Most people don't think of this even though it’s so obvious. Chances are, they do not know about it. They may or may not want to participate, but it can't hurt to ask. Just make sure you don't exaggerate. Just tell it as it is: “they could earn extra income for very little effort”.

You can also invite your online friends in social networks to join, just don’t act too spammy or they might remove you from their friends list; or worst your account might get banned. Create MySpace, Facebook and Twitter pages with your referral links and banners in them. Be sure to add personality and content to your pages in order to keep visitors there longer. Once your pages are complete, link your friends and family to them to get the word spreading started.

The methods above are a guide for you on how to start getting those referrals. Though building your referral may take some time, rest assured using these methods will give you new sign-ups ready to pour in a lot of money. Facebook will have to open up the books

There are a lot of rumors and speculation afoot about Facebook's $500 million funding round led by Goldman Sachs and the investment bank's subsequent private offering of Facebook stock to deep-pocketed clients--more speculation, in fact, than there usually is around news pertaining to Facebook.

But one thing stands out as fact: should Facebook hit the threshold of 500 individual shareholders, it will be required to either start trading publicly or at least begin disclosing its financial information, according to rules set by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. At the end of the fiscal year in which it reaches this milestone, it has 120 days to comply.

A number of news outlets claim to have seen a set of documents distributed by Facebook to prospective members of the elite Goldman investor bunch, and the documents assert that Facebook will surpass that 500-shareholder margin in this fiscal year, which jibes with the calendar year for Facebook. Basically, the company is acknowledging that about 120 days into next year--by April 2012--it'll be forced to open up the books.

What's less clear is whether it would disclose its financials while remaining privately held, or actually go public. A Facebook IPO has been talked about for years, but investors and executives at the company have repeatedly fanned away rumors and have said there would be nothing until 2012 at the very earliest.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been notably hesitant to go public. Much of this has been about preserving the culture of Facebook's early days, and Zuckerberg's belief that the feel of a start-up is preferable to that of a huge company--$50 billion valuation be damned.

Facebook has managed to keep its shareholder numbers low because of a 2008 change to its stock structure in which new employees were given stock that would not vest until the company went public--which does not require that stock to count toward the tally approaching 500. But early employees and investors have been trading Facebook stock so actively on private markets, even before the massive Goldman Sachs deal, that it had already piqued the interest of the SEC.

5 Questions to Ask to Find Out a Good PTC Site

Registering in paid-to-click sites or PTC sites is one of the easiest ways to earn money. It is really cool that you can get paid for what you really do on the internet. The phrase 'get paid to surf the internet' looks really great, but is it really great?

Unfortunately, the answer is 'No'. Because, it is much difficult to find out a good site among hundreds of scam sites out there and even if you find one, unless you have a couple of hundred referrals, you cannot earn some money that you can call as 'earning'.

So, how to find out if a PTC site is a scam or a good one?

There are five important questions which you have to ask to find out the truth.

1.Is it too good to be true?

Stay away!

No one can run a business without a reasonable profit and the offers that claim to give a lot to you actually take a lot from you and disappear.

2. How much variety is there in the type of ads shown and what is the number of sites that advertise in the paid-to-click site that you have signed up for?

If a PTC site is struggling hard to get advertisers and show only self serving ads, then it is doubtful that the site can pay you in the time it has promised.

3. How is the feedback of public?

Most of the members post the issues about PTC sites in forums and hence you can easily find out where the site stands. Do a Google search with the phrase '[sitename] + scam'.. If it is really scam, then the first page of the search results is enough to show it out.

If the site itself has a forum, it is a bit trustworthy. Go there and check the posts.

4. Do the FAQ and 'Terms of service' clear enough?

This is important for two reasons. Most of the PTC sites use the same script for their sites. If the site is scam, then site owner may not really care to edit the FAQ section and leave it with the default content. The default content may show a wrong minimum payout value or something else.

Second reason is, most of the sites hide their minus points inside the 'Terms of service'. For example, it may say that when $100 is paid out, a $25 commission will be deducted.

5. How good and stable is the site?

A good PTC site will have its own paid domain and will not be hosted in a subdomain or a free domain like co.nr, .tk etc. The site should be always up, should do a really good spam check, should be easy to navigate and make people comfortable to browse. If it does this all, then it means that the site owner has made a good investment on the site and should have enough money to pay its members.

Lastly, remember that PTC sites cannot make you rich. They can only give you some pocket money for some online purchases. But if you are really sincere and smart, you can make something higher.

Building Strong SEO Content

There are a lot of different ways to say the same thing. Anyone who has performed keyword research knows that people search for a lot of the same things using very different phrases and terminology. For example, if you’re looking to build your online business, you could search for: internet marketing, website marketing, online marketing, website promotion, search engine optimization, search engine marketing, SEO, and a dozen other variations.

Or if you’re a physician looking to manage health records online, you could search for: EHR, EMR, electronic health records, electronic medical records, medical software, personal health records, practice management software, and so on. One of the problems many business owners and SEOs come up against is how to optimize their site for each of these variations that all potentially mean the same thing.

Quite often, your website will have different pages on your site that can be (or already are) focused on different aspects of your service that cover each of these topics as separate entities. In other cases, your similar phrases can be (or are) used interchangeably throughout the site.

The problem comes when each of these similarly defined terms is extremely competitive, and using them interchangeably won’t allow you a strong enough SEO focus to achieve rankings for any of them. You need pages that focus on one (or just a couple) phrase(s) at a time if you want them to be successful.

Optimize Similar Keywords on Existing Site Pages

Ideally, you want to target keywords that are already a natural fit for any given page. But, when several keyword phrases essentially mean the same thing, there is no clear distinction to be able to say definitively which keywords fit where. For example, “keyword research” is pretty clear while “keyword optimization” can mean the same thing as SEO and all the other phrases.

One easy solution is to find a content page relevant for any group of similar meaning phrases, choose the highest volume phrase and target that. Since each phrase basically means the same thing to the common searcher, changing all instances of various phrases to the single phrase you’re targeting can be done without changing the meaning of the page in any way.

The value here is that the core message of the page hasn’t been changed or the sales message diminished. It’s simply a matter of talking about “online marketing” as opposed to “internet promotion”, or “search engine marketing” vs. “website marketing.” I should note that you don’t always want to change every instance. Some variety is a good thing.

Reduce Site Clutter… Blog Instead

The strategy above works great, but it can become problematic once you run out of pages and still have a number of phrases left to optimize. Most people will just go about creating new pages of sales content to target the remaining phrases. The problem here is you’re going outside your core marketing message to do this and creating site/navigational clutter as well.

Usually these new pages offer nothing new that is substantial or relevant that can’t be found elsewhere on the site. Your site then becomes over-run with pages of content that were built for the sole purpose of getting keyword rankings. That may help with rankings, but not for converting visitors once they arrive.

This is where blogs can come into play. Putting together keyword focused blog posts can help you optimize for additional keywords, while not worrying about adding additional “optimization” clutter to your main site.

But before you rush out to create some generic content to get your keyword on a page, think it through. Your blog isn’t your sales content. So don’t go creating another sales page. Think of a way to present new information in a new, unique, and informative way.

Once you have this awesome piece of standalone content written, place it on your blog, but not as just any other blog post. Instead, you can create a standalone “article” that is linked from your blog navigation. This keeps that content timeless and prevents it from getting buried with the rest of the stuff. Be sure to update this information regularly as necessary.

Be Selective When Optimizing Your Phases

Undoubtedly, when performing keyword research, you’ll find a number of phrases that are similarly themed. Usually these are phrases using a single core term (say, “internet marketing”) that add additional qualifiers such as: “internet marketing services”, “internet marketing strategy”, “internet marketing consultant”, “affiliate internet marketing”, and so on.

One of the worst things you can do is to try and target all of these phrases on a single page. The better strategy is to organize these phrases into supporting themes and then build pages around each theme. Think of it as building in sub-categories for your product and services.

When going this route, adding new pages to the site (rather than the blog) is actually a good idea. You’re building strong, relevant content that targets the specific needs of your visitors using language that addresses that.

Building Strong SEO Content

When keywords are applied correctly throughout your site, whether to existing pages, new pages, blog posts, or wherever, content can be written naturally without feeling forced or being noticed by your visitor. The end result will be a robust site, targeting dozens, if not hundreds, of keywords, all effectively optimized to bring in targeted traffic while still increasing sales.

Google's Chrome OS May Cloud Microsoft's Windows

What's the difference between a browser and an operating system? Or, can Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) take on Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is its sweet spot -- the Windows operating system? Google held a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday announcing Google Chrome OS, an Internet-based operating system that has been launched in beta version on a laptop known simply as "Cr-48." By next summer, both Acer and Samsung will release laptops with Chrome OS and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) chips.

During the presentation by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and a number of product managers, Schmidt admitted he was at first vehemently against Google developing a browser, but Larry and Sergey insisted. Now that browser has morphed into a full open source operating system.

Google has invited users to participate in the beta period for Chrome OS. Anyone interested can go to the pilot program page to apply to participate in the beta testing. The company is looking for individuals who are willing to use the notebook as their primary computer and respond to queries about the product's effectiveness. Google is looking for students, business people, and those involved in nonprofit organizations. Those who are selected will receive a Cr-48 notebook, all black, without logos.

Chrome Web Store

Google also opened its Chrome Web Store on Tuesday. Developers have already started to upload apps. Right now, the store is only available in the United States, but Google noted it will expand to more countries and currencies early in 2011. Google notes the store will be featured prominently in Chrome, and it's designed to help people find apps and help developers reach millions of users.

Google also announced the number of Chrome users has swelled from 40 million to 120 million in the past year. The company attributes the popularity of Chrome to its speed.

Competition With Microsoft

With a notebook operating system, Google has moved deeper into Microsoft territory than it ventured with its mobile Android OS.

"You could argue they're going after Microsoft, but they are not doing it head-to-head," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

"They're aiming to present businesses and consumers with an alternative to the stand-alone computing experience which has been the model for 30 years," he told the E-Commerce Times. "It's an alternative operating system, yes, but it's really an alternative behavior. If you look back at personal computing over the last decade, the alternatives to Windows -- mostly Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Linux -- still preserved the same model."

The Chrome OS model may be closer to Android than it is to Windows, since applications will be Internet-based.

recently came across a site that might interest you. It's called BigMoneyClix. It's similar to Clixsense and Buxto but it has some interesting features that you can take advantage of if your into online marketing.

The way it works is that you click on ads that are placed by other members. You get one cent per click plus you get paid for your referral's clicks. You can make pretty good money as a free member and it doubles for premium. The premium membership is $30 which is less than buxto, which I'm also a member of. VGA Given 5 Years to Live

The VGA port, the connection that's bridged computers to their monitors almost from the birth of the PC industry, is on its way out.

Chip manufacturers Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and AMD (NYSE: AMD), with backing from various computer vendors, have announced their support for the venerable technology will be phased out by 2015.

They will speed up the adoption of DisplayPort and High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) ports instead.

These newer technologies take up less real estate on laptops, have lower power consumption than VGA ports and support higher screen resolutions. They also support digital technology, which VGA doesn't -- thus paving the way for richer apps on PCs.

Nuts and Bolts of the Announcement

Intel and AMD will phase out support for VGA beginning in 2013 and expect the technology to be off all their product lines by 2015. It will be replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort.

These newer technologies enable slimmer laptop designs and support higher resolutions with deeper color than the 20-year-old VGA.

The move's intended to phase out old analog legacy connectors, Intel spokesperson Nick Knuppfer told TechNewsWorld. "HDMI and DisplayPort are modern digital interfaces that support higher resolutions and screen sizes," he added.

Both Intel and AMD will also stop supporting low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) by 2013. LVDS is an electrical signaling system that enables high transmission rates over twisted-pair cables. It moves video data from graphics adapters to computer monitors. Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) FireWire serial bus interface uses LVDS.

The chip makers favor DisplayPort 1.2 for PC monitors and HDMI 1.4a for connectivity to TV screens.

Samsung and LG, for example, already offer some products with DisplayPort technology embedded into them. Both these vendors, as well as Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) and Lenovo, are on-board with Intel's and AMD's plans to phase out of VGA.

Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) was notable by its absence.

"Lenovo already offers PCs that feature HDMI or displayPort," company spokesperson Kristy Fair told TechNewsWorld.

AMD and Nvidia did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Putting the Change in Perspective

"This is a normal technological advance," IDC analyst David Daoud told TechNewsWorld. "VGA has been around since the beginning of PC computing."

"The VGA port is a near-anachronism in today's world of super-slim laptops and ultra-low voltage processors," Randy Lawson, a principal analyst at IHS iSuppli, told TechNewsWorld.

More importantly, the issue revolves around cost.

With newer CPUs and GPUs migrating below 45nm CMOS processes, supporting the 5-volt requirement for VGA, if it's to remain integrated on these chips, will be cumbersome, Lawson pointed out. "It will increasingly be moved off-chip, adding total system cost as well as absorbing precious PCB real estate."

The fact that HDMI and DisplayPort consume less energy probably also helped bring about VGA's expected demise.

"The green aspect of it's important," Daoud said. "When you have technologies that are competitively priced and consume less energy, it makes sense for people to move to them."

Looking at the Stats

IDC's figures show that VGA use in laptops and other portable PCs will fall sharply. "From 2009 to 2014, we're looking at a negative compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31 percent for VGA on the portable side," Daoud remarked.

Only 24.5 million of the 427 million laptops in users' hands in 2014 will be VGA-enabled, Daoud stated. Another 279 million will use HDMI, while 167 million will use DisplayPort.

"DisplayPort penetration is going gangbusters," Daoud said. "It will have a 106 percent CAGR between 2009 and 2014."

That rapid growth is probably being fueled by the release of DisplayPort version 1.2 in January. "DisplayPort v1.2 seems to have the features people want," Daoud pointed out. "These include daisy-chained multiple support, USB and Ethernet capabilities."

DisplayPort will be implemented in commercial PCs, IDC forecasts. "This is a commercial desktop story," Daoud stated.

And who are these posting pundits that claim to be the guardians of contextual virtue? To find a concentrated number of the "profit free faithful", some, can be found at conferences such as BlogNashville, held at institutions like Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Actors, too, are not immune to the sell out syndrome. So, if you are new to blogging or thinking about making some "coin" from your existing blog, let me provide you with some "points to ponder" if you are on the fence. Facebook is expected to announce sometime this week that it has topped half a billion users. That's 500 million globally. For a website that began life in the humble environs of a college dorm room, it's quite a milestone. However, many of those users are concerned about how their information is being used, as Facebook has learned repeatedly as it has made changes along the way.

The question remains, though, when the service has grown from 400 million users to more than 500 million in less than six months, are privacy concerns really likely to change how business is done in social networking?

"People are deeply invested in Facebook," Jennifer Golbeck, assistant professor of information studies at the University of Maryland, told TechNewsWorld. Thus, they are likely to weigh the advantages of having hundreds of friends and a wealth of information already available to them on this particular service against anything Facebook may do to change its privacy policies.

Pennies for Privacy

In fact, nearly half of people in the U.S. who use social networking are concerned about their privacy, according to recent research by Marist Poll. Of the roughly 1,000 U.S. citizens polled, 23 percent reported being "very concerned," and another 27 percent reported that they were "concerned." Still, 43 percent of those contacted reported having a profile on Facebook or a site like it -- MySpace, for instance.

Interestingly, while women reported more overall concern with privacy issues, they also outnumbered men in social networking use, according to Marist, by 45 percent to 40 percent.

For these people, Facebook has become an "important part of their communication structure," said Golbeck. So, while a major change in privacy policies -- like the one implemented by Facebook several months ago with the universal rollout of the "Like" button -- may rile users, it may not disturb them enough to push them off a service used by so many of those friends, colleagues, and family members with whom they wish to communicate.

Money From the Millions

For any online service -- from streaming music to photo libraries -- the challenge always has been how to monetize use. People may check their Facebook accounts once, twice, or tens of times per day, but who really profits? In this case, it's the advertisers, and Facebook has taken a raft of complaints to be able to provide ever-more-granular information about users to prospective and current ad buyers.

That "Like" button, for example, provides a great deal of information to advertisers, who then can serve up ads tailored specifically to users' special interests as people perform simple tasks such as updating their status or sending out the latest picture of a kid's summer activity.

However, while Facebook -- and other tech giants like Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) -- might be engaging in the same competitive strategies that have long fueled the marketing efforts of brick-and-mortar companies, their reach is amplified by the very fact of the numbers of people and website visits involved, Claire Simmers, professor and chair of international business at St. Joseph's University, told TechNewsWorld.

"Along with this sharing comes an added responsibility for your own privacy," Simmers said.

Apparently, people are taking that privacy seriously enough to warrant some detailed responses from Facebook, even if they aren't leaving the service over their concerns. Earlier this month, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg posted a detailed entry on the official Facebook blog explaining how those personalized ads are served up to individuals' profile pages.

Only aggregate data is supplied to advertisers, she stressed. Facebook does not share personal information with advertisers. As an added explanation, the company supplied a video called "How Advertising Works on Facebook" to further assure users with privacy worries.

Google Inc. is preparing to roll out a music download service tied to its search engine later this year, followed by an online subscription service in 2011, according to people familiar with the Internet giant's discussions with the music industry.

Google's proposals are still vague, say these people, and it's unclear whether it has struck any deals with record labels so far. But Google has been stepping up conversations about offering new music services tied to phones running its Android operating system along with the broader Web, said people who have been briefed on the talks. The launch of Google's download music store is still months away, these people said.

The discussions come as Google has been pushing deeper into music. Last year, as a first step, the company began linking to partner websites like iLike and Pandora through its search engine, allowing people to stream songs with one click from its search page. Now, the company is looking to tie its own service to its search engine, too.

The discussions come as the Mountain View, Calif.-based search company has been ramping up on entertainment content. Google is also moving to add professional content on its YouTube video site, and is planning to roll out a digital bookstore this year.

The launch of a Google music store would heighten tensions with Apple Inc., whose iTunes store is the leading U.S. digital music seller. Apple also recently began selling digital books. The two Silicon Valley giants have been at odds since Google launched its Android mobile phone software, a direct challenge to Apple's popular iPhone. Apple recently hit back with an advertising platform for its iPhone and iPad tablet that has terms Google says could limit competition.

Google and Apple declined to comment for this article.

Google's push into music retailing is likely to be welcomed by music labels that are increasingly concerned about Apple's dominant position among U.S. music retailers. Apple accounted for 28% of all music purchased by U.S. consumers in the first quarter, according to NPD Group.

The recording industry has long sought a counterweight to Apple's growing clout, but rivals such as Amazon.com Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. remain far behind with about a 12% share each, according to NPD.

The first phase of Google's music service is expected to be a Web store where users can buy and download tracks, music industry insiders said. It will be tied directly to Google's search engine, so that people using Google.com to look for a particular group or song will be served a link to the company's music store, according to people familiar with the talks.

These people also said the download store would be an "interim" step toward what is expected to be a more ambitious cloud-based subscription service compatible with mobile phones built with Google's Android software. A cloud-based service would enable subscribers to stream music directly from the Internet to their mobile phones, so that users wouldn't need to store music files on their devices. Google recently provided a glimpse of a Web-based music store within its Android Market, which sells apps for phones built with Google's Android mobile software.

Apple in the past several months bought and then shut down online music service Lala.com, prompting widespread speculation it might also soon launch a new cloud-based version of its iTunes music store.

YouTube Builds a Cutting Room in the Cloud

Google has unveiled the YouTube Video Editor, which lets people edit their videos in the cloud.

The application lets users merge clips into a longer video or edit down a video, among other things. Google said it will add new features based on user feedback.

The video editor is available on TestTube, which is a laboratory of sorts for YouTube.

About the YouTube Video Editor

The video editor lets users combine multiple short clips they have uploaded to create a longer video. It also lets them trim the beginning and ending of their videos.

Users can add soundtracks from Google's AudioSwap library. They can also create new videos without worrying about file formats, then publish them to YouTube with one click.

"We're looking forward to adding new features based on your feedback to make the video more powerful while still retaining its simplicity," Google's Rushabh Doshi and Joshua Siegel wrote on the YouTube blog.

"The video editor is pretty simplistic and only does two things," remarked Andrew Eisner, director of community and content at Retrevo. "It lets you rearrange some clips and add soundtracks from this new Google sound library," he added.

"We've released the editor into TestTube, which is where we push products we want the community to test out before we push them out more widely to the '.com' site," YouTube spokesperson Chris Dale told TechNewsWorld.

He declined to give a date for when the editor will be put into general circulation.

The Rough Edges

Some early users have complained that the editor is very slow and video takes a long time to load, but Dale pointed out that this is because the editor is online.

"Because it's based in the cloud, Video Editor's responsiveness is dependent on the strength and speed of your Internet connection," he remarked.

Other users have warned that Google's servers could be overloaded because edited videos have to be saved separately from the originals, and that will mean there may be several versions of a video online unless the earlier ones are deleted.

"We're not worried too much about this, and our users certainly shouldn't worry about it," Dale said. "We have enough servers to easily handle the 24 hours of video that is uploaded to YouTube every minute, and regularly challenge our users to upload even more content to YouTube."

Shaking Up the Industry

Google's entry into the free online video editing industry will shake things up for the incumbents, Retrevo's Eisner told TechNewsWorld.

"Sure, it validates the idea of this service, but it brings to mind that old story about the elephant stepping on the ant and saying, 'There, you've got your validation,'" Eisner explained. "It could spell trouble for some of the other online video editors unless they come up with some differentiation."

A host of free video editors is available online. They include Cuts from Rifftrax; Jaycuts, and Motionbox, which powers personal video uploads for Shutterfly and AOL.

Cuts is a service that lets users create and share their takes of any online video. They can insert sound effects, add captions and loop the parts they like the most. They can then embed their creation on any webpage or blog, or email it to their friends. It works with any platform and within any browser.

Motionbox offers a personal video service that lets users share videos only with people they select. It offers a basic free service as well as a premium, for-pay service. The premium service offers "virtually unlimited" video storage, high-quality downloads to a computer or iPod, a high-definition player and full-screen playback, DVDs and Flipbooks of members' videos and large file uploads.

Jaycuts is one of the free online video editors that offers differentiation by licensing its editor out, Eisner said.

"If you have a social media site or are building a travel site and want to let people edit videos on that site, you can let them do that by licensing Jaycuts' video editor," Eisner explained. "You can't do that with YouTube on your site, you'll have to go to the YouTube site.

SEO: Google's Next Big Move

(Will your website be ready, or will you be playing catch-up six months too late?

November 2003 might go down in history as the month that Google shook a lot of smug webmasters and search engine optimization (SEO) specialists from the apple tree. But more than likely, it was just a precursor of the BIG shakeup to come.

Google touts highly its secret PageRank algorithm. Although PageRank is just one factor in choosing what sites appear on a specific search, it is the main way that Google determines the "importance" of a website.

In recent months, SEO specialists have become expert at manipulating PageRank, particularly through link exchanges.

There is nothing wrong with links. They make the Web a web rather than a series of isolated islands. However, PageRank relies on the naturally "democratic" nature of the web, whereby webmasters link to sites they feel are important for their visitors. Google rightly sees link exchanges designed to boost PageRank as stuffing the ballot box.

I was not surprised to see Google try to counter all the SEO efforts. In fact, I have been arguing the case with many non-believing SEO specialists over the past couple months. But I was surprised to see the clumsy way in which Google chose to do it.

Google targeted specific search terms, including many of the most competitive and commercial terms. Many websites lost top positions in five or six terms, but maintain their positions in several others. This had never happened before. For Google, this shakeup is just a temporary fix. It will have to make much bigger changes if it is serious about harnessing the "democratic" nature of the Web and neutralizing the artificial results of so many link exchanges.

Here are a few techniques Google might use (remember to think like a search engine):

Google might start valuing inbound links within paragraphs much higher than links that stand on their own. (For all we know, Google is already doing this.) Such links are much less likely to be the product of a link exchange, and therefore more likely to be genuine "democratic" votes.
Google might look at the concentration of inbound links across a website. If most inbound links point to the home page, that is another possible indicator of a link exchange, or at least that the site's content is not important enough to draw inbound links (and it is content that Google wants to deliver to its searchers).
Google might take a sample of inbound links to a domain, and check to see how many are reciprocated back to the linking domains. If a high percentage are reciprocated, Google might reduce the site's PageRank accordingly. Or it might set a cut-point, dropping from its index any website with too many of its inbound links reciprocated.
Google might start valuing outbound links more highly. Two pages with 100 inbound links are, in theory, valued equally, even if one has 20 outbound links and the other has none. But why should Google send its searchers down a dead-end street, when the information highway is paved just as smoothly on a major thoroughfare?
Google might weigh a website's outbound link concentration. A website with most outbound links concentrated on just a few pages is more likely to be a "link-exchanger" than a site with links spread out across its pages.

Google might use a combination of these techniques and ones not mentioned here. We cannot predict the exact algorithm, nor can we assume that it will remain constant. What we can do is to prepare our websites to look and act like a website would on a "democratic" Web as Google would see it.

For Google to hold its own against upstart search engines, it must deliver on its PageRank promise. Its results reflect the "democratic" nature of the Web. Its algorithm must prod webmasters to give links on their own merit. That won't be easy or even completely possible. And people will always find ways to turn Google's algorithm to their advantage. But the techniques above can send the Internet a long way back to where Google promises it will be.

HP Delivers Web-Based Printing but It's Not Clear Who Wants It

Printer giant HP (NYSE: HPQ) has announced a new line of printers that will ship equipped with a suite of services allowing their owners to print to them from anywhere on the Web, using any device capable of sending an email. The line starts at US$99 and the Web-based service will be supported by digital print advertising.

Every HP ePrint printer in the line, said the company, will have a unique email address to which users can direct items for printing. Users also can send documents to print through an HP ePrint mobile app on their smartphone device to a home, office, or public print location such as a hotel or FedEx Office store. Supported file formats include Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Office, PDF and JPEG.

The question, though, is whether smartphone and tablet users are clamoring to be able to print from their gadgets. Not so much, according to Josh Martin, senior analyst with Strategy Analytics.

"We live in a digital age," Martin told TechNewsWorld, "and this is an analog solution."

Partners Galore

Customers who buy one of the new e-Print-capable printers will be able to access their Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) suite of applications, such as Google Docs, Photos and Calendar, directly from their printers, according to HP. Documents and photos can be sent to print from iPhones and other smartphones and, perhaps most interestingly, the iPad, which has no native print support.

Content partners announced along with the printers include Crayola, DocStoc, Facebook, msnbc.com, Picasa Web Albums, Reuters, and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO). Each will provide Web-based print applications. It's a heavy-hitting group, to be sure.

A service called "Scheduled Delivery" will allow customers to choose content to be pushed to a printer at a designated time each day or week, said HP. News is one example the company gave.

In a pitch to parents, the company also noted that customers might "choose fun kids' activities from Disney (NYSE: DIS) to be ready when the children get home from school.

However, the most successful category of applications in the mobile space to date have been entertainment and gaming, noted Martin. "These applications, which generally dominate the top-ten lists on iPhone, are not generally in need of printing," he explained.

Aye, There's the Rub

Like users of free Web services such as Pandora before them, the buyers of HP's new printers may be surprised to find coupons and ads on the materials they print through the ePrint tools. HP has positioned the information to be provided by print advertisers as "premium content" and stressed that "brands can add value to their audience by populating select print content with customized messages."

In translation, though, this means that -- like a My Yahoo homepage or Flickr album -- the service will be supported by ads pushed to consumers. Many, like those who just want to print their Grocery IQ lists easily or send a photograph received on a netbook to a high-quality printer quickly, likely won't mind the intrusion.

"Having the ability for a printer to print from a mobile device could be a useful feature in differentiating one product from another," posited Martin.

While the ePrint service may be a welcome addition, then, to an already strong line of personal printers, it's "a good feature, but not the makings of a successful standalone product," predicted Martin.

Coinciding with the ePrint announcement, HP announced a new app available for Android smartphones, called "HP iPrint Photo." The app will allow direct wireless printing to HP inkjet printers connected to a local WiFi network, said the company.

Currently, HP supports such printing from Symbian, Windows Mobile, and iPhone/iPad/iPod touch devices. The Snapfish by HP mobile app for Android is expected to launch this summer.

It's always a heart-warming occasion when some company or organization opts not to use Windows, and that's nothing if not an increasingly common phenomenon.

But when said company is none other than Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) -- and when it's done in an apparently public way, with explicit mention of Linux as a preferable alternative -- and when Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) feels worried enough to try to "set the record straight" soon afterward -- well, parties just have to break out in the Linux blogosphere.

Slashdot (not just once, but twice), LXer (once and again) and Linux and Whatever were just a few of the sites that played host to such events, which saw bloggers debating everything from the security question to the practice of dogfooding.

What could Linux Girl do but join in?

'Quite a Feather in Linux's Cap'

"I'm always excited to hear about a high-profile company publicly adopting Linux, but I think Google is especially important -- assuming it's true," Slashdot blogger Just Some Guy told LinuxInsider.

It's still news when "staid companies such as IBM (NYSE: IBM) warmly embrace Linux, but you'd kind of expect that; those organizations have reputations for caring more about results than image," Just Some Guy explained.

While that's no less true for Google's internal systems, "as a whole they're seen as fresh and exciting and hip," he added. "It's quite a feather in Linux's cap to be endorsed by a company with such a trendsetting history as a business-ready alternative to Windows."

Image aside, Just Some Guy was also rejoicing for practical reasons.

"It's nice to know that the same people who are developing the web apps I enjoy using will have the same desktop system I do," he said. "Now the little rough edges I've had to tolerate are shared by the developers who have the ability to fix them."

'What Does That Say for the Rest of Us?'

The move will likely "cause a lot of decision makers to really think about the security of Windows," Slashdot blogger Patrick Narkinsky suggested.

"Google is an incredibly sophisticated operation, with resources most companies can only dream of," he explained. "If they are saying that they find Windows to be an unacceptable risk, what does that say for the rest of us?"

Another likely result will be to "accelerate the development of Google's cloud-based offerings" such as its word processor and other office products, Narkinsky added, as well as encouraging "feature-parity," he said.

"Until now, we Linux users have had to wait for Google products to be released for non-Windows platforms," he explained. "If Google is really committed to a 'No Windows' policy, one can only hope that they will at least release Linux, Mac and Windows versions of desktop applications at the same time for all three platforms."

'Google Believes Its Own PR'

Eric Schmidt actually talked about "exactly the same kind of move two months ago at Google's Atmosphere event," Slashdot blogger Daengbo told LinuxInsider. "If you haven't watched his 'Fireside Chat' interview, I recommend that you do."

In addition to improving security and "eating its own dogfood, Google will be proving to enterprises that it is possible to run a company on Google products, creating trust in this new market," Daengbo explained.

"Google is a company that believes its own PR," he added. "It believes that everything on the web should be open and that everything should be in the cloud. Google trusts in its own ability to excel in this new, open world."

'Microsoft Has to Be Pissed'

Slashdot blogger cupantae had a different view.

"I think that the main reason for the switch can only be to publicly humiliate Microsoft," he asserted. "Here is a company which is saying to the world, 'Windows = worse security.'"

Indeed, "Microsoft has to be pissed," Montreal consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack agreed. "Not only did Google institute an 'anything but Microsoft' policy, but they did it publicly so other companies will be encouraged to try it too."

'Malware Is a Daily Problem'

Then, too, there's the fact that "Google will be releasing its own desktop OS later this year, and the main target consumer group will be Windows users," cupantae added. "Making an operating system appear superior is a tricky game. Google will make every effort to ensure that Windows looks bad."

That doesn't mean, however, that the move isn't the right one technically, he added.

"When you take away the games and the specialist applications which will only run on Windows, really what are you left with?" cupantae pointed out. "It's slow, it's incredibly buggy, and malware is a daily problem. And all of that also applies to Windows 7, as much as it is hailed as the future of computing."

'Windows Sucks More Power'

Google will even benefit through reduced energy costs, noted Barbara Hudson, a blogger on Slashdot who goes by "Tom" on the site.

"Windows simply sucks more power than linux," Hudson explained. "More power means more heat and decreased component life."

If there are 20,000 Google employees -- half using Windows, but most with at least two computers -- "we're back up to 20,000 computers," she began. "At a 50-watts-per-computer savings (number pulled out of thin air, the same source as all those Microsoft TCO studies), that's a lot of juice -- a megawatt less. On an annual basis, that's 200 homes."

Bottom line? "This move will save google over (US)$2 million in electricity over the next decade," Hudson predicted. "It's nice to know that being more secure can save you both grief and money."

'I Don't Do Windows'

Overall, "good for Google," was blogger Robert Pogson's summary. "This puts the lie to nonsense like 'essential for business' when fans talk about that other OS. Saving the cost of licensing and insecurity forever easily justifies any expense of migrating."

Of course, "the litmus test is how this looks down the road," Slashdot blogger yagu pointed out. "How successful will Google be cleaning house (or windows)? How complete will the conversion be?

"If, in the near future, we see an article with glowing reviews of a business of Google's splendor running happily with NO Windows, it opens doors for Linux and Mac and lets CIOs broach the idea with more confidence that a) it really can be done and, b) it won't be shouted down at the first meeting," yagu explained.

"I for one welcome our new overlords of a non-Windows universe," yagu concluded. "I've always wondered what it would be like to work somewhere where you can accurately say, 'I don't do windows.

Facebook is responding to yet another "clickjacking" attack, following similar attacks that reportedly impacted thousands over the weekend.

This particular form of clickjacking baits the hook by purporting to link to a subject Facebook users might find interesting. The latest attack consists of a link that appears to point to a website displaying a naked photo of Hayley Williams, lead singer of American rock band Paramore. Others including supposed links to singer Justin Beiber's phone number and a video of a man who took a picture of himself every day for eight years.

Clicking on the link will force the user's profile to indicate he or she "likes" the page, and that gets published on the victim's own profile and shared with friends. Those users then see that their mutual friend apparently gave the link a stamp of approval and may be more likely to click on it themselves.

Putting Out Fires

Facebook says the clickjacking attacks have impacted relatively few people.

"Overall, an extremely small percentage of users was affected," Facebook spokesperson Simon Axten told TechNewsWorld. By its own count, Facebook has well over 400 million active users.

The social networking giant has blocked the URL associated with the clickjacking site, Axten said, and "we're cleaning up the relatively few cases where it was posted."

While Facebook has the power to block any URL posted to its system, the clickjackers could counter that move simply by changing the URL they're using, Sean-Paul Correll, a threat researcher at Panda Security, told TechNewsWorld.

Like Is a Four-Letter Word

The clickjacking attacks happening over the past week exploit Facebook's "like" feature, which lets a user indicate approval of what the user's friends are sharing on Facebook.

Facebook members see links to subjects that their friends appear to have "liked" when they log onto their Facebook page, Sophos security consultant Graham Cluley said.

Clicking on the link takes the Facebook to a page that often contains a button asking them to click it to confirm they're over 18 years old. This isn't uncommon for sites that carry salacious material, such as the supposed Williams photos.

When users click on that button, however, it adds a link to the users' Facebook profiles saying they "like" the site. Facebook then publishes the "like" to the users' friends, spreading the worm.

So where's the threat? So far, the clickjackers haven't apparently done anything more than force users to unwittingly endorse their websites, but they could easily launch password-stealing Trojans or other malware.

iFraming Victims

The clickjackers create an "iFrame," which they layer invisibly over the Facebook site.

An iFrame is an inline frame that places one HTML document in the frame of another.

Frames let developers split an HTML browser window into segments, each of which can show a different document. This reduces bandwidth use because repeating parts of a layout can be used in one frame while variable content, such as a Flash presentation, can be shown in another.

Inline frames, or iFrames, can be the target frame for links defined by other elements, and that's how the clickjackers used this technology.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) introduced iFrames in 1997, in Internet Explorer.

Been There, Clickjacked That

This round of is at least the fourth wave of clickjacking attacks to hit Facebook since November of 2009.

In May, some users were clickjacked with messages like "This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of Eating A Banana, Check It Out!" according to Graham Cluley's blog for that date.

Before that, a Facebook clickjacking attack in November of 2009 displayed a photograph of a scantily clad woman on a user's profile pages with a message inviting viewers to click a button to "see something hot." Clicking on the button automatically updated the viewer's profile page to include the image with the message.

Facebook blocked the URL associated with the site of that attack and began cleaning up the mess.

Twitter has also reported incidents of clickjacking, which the site eventually blocked.

Coping With Clickjacks

Clickjacks succeed because people tend to trust information given to them on social networking sites, especially if it appears to have won the approval of several friends.

"People have an inherent trust of information that appears to be from their friends or family," said Panda Security's Correll. "When a post comes out that says 'check out this photo' or 'check out this post,' and it appears to be from your friend or someone in your family, you naturally click on that link. That propagates the attack."

Traditional antivirus protection doesn't help prevent clickjacking because it's a relatively new form of attack, being only about two years old, Correll said.

Preventing clickjacking attacks requires users trust no one.

"Break the inherent trust you have for friends' and family's online profiles," Correll recommended. "We should ask ourselves, 'Will my friend or family member really post that?' before clicking on something."

"Don't click on suspicious links, even if they've been sent or posted by friends," Facebook's Axten said.

"Ignore the 'Check Out the Best Beach Bods' link from your friend," Kevin Haley, director of Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) Security Response, told TechNewsWorld. "It likely came from a hacker who broke into their account."

Users ignore requests from people they don't know, Haley recommended. They should also stay informed of Facebook's privacy settings and the changes they undergo, he said.

Facebook Can't Be Trusted

The new privacy controls Facebook announced Wednesday were met with criticism the following day from privacy groups that called the new policies inadequate.
In a conference call on Thursday, representatives of the groups insisted on a Federal Trade Commission investigation of the social networking giant and regulatory oversight.
They also questioned Facebook's commitment to privacy and its honesty.
What Privacy Controls?
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday that the social networking site is making its privacy controls simpler. He also expressed his company's desire to make no further changes to its privacy settings in the immediate future.
"The whole process raises questions about Facebook's actual commitment to privacy," said Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. "If you review the press release Facebook put out last December claiming to provide user privacy, you'll see that it in fact let it collect more user information."
Those December changes led the Electronic Privacy Information Center, together with the Center for Digital Democracy, the American Library Association, the Consumer Federation of America and other privacy organizations, to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Facebook must develop privacy controls for its virtual currency and location products, among other features, and install opt-in policies for general information and personalization, Chester said.
"Despite procedural improvements made as a result of Facebook's new privacy rules, the substance remains unchanged," said Joe W. (Chip) Pitts III, president of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee. "They're constant with Mark Zuckerberg's mission to share information more widely."
"If Facebook were sincere about privacy, the default mode for privacy would be minimal information about everything," pointed out John M. Simpson of Consumer Watchdog.
Honesty Is Such a Lonely Word
The participants also questioned Facebook's honesty.
"There are still substantial questions about the deceptiveness of Facebook's approach to these issues, particularly with reference to the latest announcement on privacy controls," Pitts from the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC) said.
"I don't think we have any reason to trust this company now based on their behavior," Consumer Watchdog's Simpson added. "The whole process shows something of the Silicon Valley mindset that Facebook and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) follow -- you push the envelope as far as you can, grab as much data as you can, and then, when there's pushback, you do something else."
Participants in the conference call also criticized Facebook's stance that people who opt in to its site voluntarily provide their information, and so they implicitly consent to having their information published.
"A large majority of Facebook users are minors, and you can't raise the issue of consent if people don't understand the implications of their actions," pointed out Robert Ellis Smith, publisher of Privacy Journal. "To have meaningful consent, people have to know the consequences of posting their information."
What Do You Mean, Your Personal Information?
In addition, participants questioned Facebook's respect for users' privacy.
"Facebook consistently violates privacy, and that's the core of our complaint to the FTC," Pitts said. "Facebook is very opaque as to the degree to which third party applications can reach into your information, even if you don't use those applications."
Users' data is available to third-party apps if their Facebook friends use those apps.
"Facebook has consciously created an architecture to encourage the transmission of user data so it could be mined without the user understanding it," the CDD's Chester said. "This is where its new approach to instant personalization doesn't work, because ultimately the default will be to let third-party applications collect data."
This access to user data by third-party apps was the focus of EPIC's complaint to the FTC last year, EPIC executive director Marc Rotenberg remarked.
"Much of the user's social graph was going to application developers without users knowing about it," Rotenberg pointed out. "Facebook users have a fair amount of control over what they post, but they can't control what Facebook provides to third parties, and that's where we think the FTC's and regulatory activities need to continue."
Time to Lay Down the Law
"We want opt in to be the model with data minimization, user control, articulation of sensitive data on, for example, finance and health that would have more stringent safeguards," the CDD's Chester insisted. "We want regulation to control the massive stealth data collection that has emerged with Facebook and Google and want the FTC to this fall state what the governing policy should be on collecting consumer data, especially on social networks," he added.
"There are very sound reasons for Federal regulatory action and oversight on an ongoing basis in this area [of Facebook's commitment to privacy]. We know that people treat Facebook as a trusted environment. Unless default settings are changed by the user, they remain more open to the world than in prior incarnations of Facebook," BORDC's Pitts said.
"There's a need for federal oversight, and we need legislation for online privacy rights," Consumer Watchdog's Simpson pointed out.
EPIC is looking to the FTC to crack down on Facebook.
"We did receive an acknowledgement by the FTC in January that said the complaint filed by EPIC and other groups raised issues of particular interest to the Commission," EPIC's Rotenberg said.

Dell Streaks Into Tablet Scene

on Tuesday announced that its upcoming Streak mobile device will be available in the United Kingdom in June, and in the U.S. later this summer.

The Streak, which runs on the Android mobile OS, is "a hybrid device that lies in the space between a smartphone and other larger tablets or netbooks," according to Dell executive Lionel Menchaca.

"The Dell Streak brings together a great Web browsing experience, multitasking capability, slick turn-by-turn navigation, and a great way to enjoy your photos, movies and music into a sleek device that's built for mobility," Menchaca said.

Despite the Streak's apparent similarities with the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad, Dell officials downplayed such comparisons.

"I wouldn't position it against the iPad; while we do share some common features, the Streak also offers phone features," Dell spokesperson Matthew Parretta told TechNewsWorld. "The Streak's a data-centric device with voice capabilities that's designed to be an extremely small, portable, and still give the real Web experience you can't get on a three-inch-screen device."
Breaking Down the Streak

If the Streak sounds familiar, it's because the gadget blog Managed hosting solutions for e-commerce, web apps, blogs and more. Click here to learn more. Engadget published leaked information about it and several other supposedly upcoming Dell products about a month ago.

The Streak has a 5-inch capacitive multi-touch 800-by-400 pixel WVGA display; a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash that uploads to social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and Flickr; a VGA front-facing camera that will enable video chat functionality in the future; and a battery that can be removed and replaced by users.

Also included: a 3.5mm headphone jack; integrated 3G wireless; WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1; a UMTS/GPRS/Edge-class 12 GSM high-speed wireless radio; and a microSD slot of up to 32 GB of data.

The Streak is built around a 1GHz Snapdragon Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) ARM-based mobile processor. It uses a version of the Android operating system customized by Dell. The Streak features Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Exchange connectivity and integration; Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Voice support; and integrated Google Maps with voice-activated search, turn-by-turn navigation and street and satellite views.

Integrated widgets give users access to social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The Streak will support over-the-air upgrades, and later this year, it will offer Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) Flash 10.1 on Android 2.2, in addition to video chat applications and other software innovations.

Dell did not disclose the Streak's pricing or its exact time frame for U.S. availability.
Will the Streak Flip, Flop or Fly?

With the euro sagging and the UK's economy in the doldrums, why is Dell releasing the Streak there first instead of here in the U.S.? And will people in the U.K. have the money to buy the Streak?

"It seems that Dell's using the UK as a test market for Streak before releasing it here in the U.S.," Jennifer Jacobson, a spokesperson at Retrevo, told TechNewsWorld. "That may be a smart move, considering America's current fascination with the iPhone, iPad and all things Apple," she added.

"There are a number of reasons, including our having the relationship with O2 for a while and announcing last month that we were working with their parent company, Telefonica," Dell's Parretta said. He denied that Dell is using the U.K. to "test out" the Streak.

Privacy Advocates: Facebook Has Fooled Us Once Too Often

Complaints about Facebook's privacy practices and policies have been building toward a new crescendo, with growing interest on the part of Congress and regulators, as well as a budding viral movement to quit the network. In an effort to cut through the din, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg decided to address his company's attitude toward consumer privacy head-on in an editorial in The Washington Post.

He gets it, Zuckerberg wrote.

"The biggest message we have heard recently is that people want easier control over their information. Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex. Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark."

If at First You Don't Succeed

Zuckerberg promised that Facebook is developing new privacy controls "that are much simpler to use" as well as "an easy way to turn off all third-party services."

Also coming, he said, are stronger controls on how users can limit the visibility of their information.

At bottom, he promised readers, Facebook is guided by a few core principals:

Users have control over how their information is shared.
Facebook does not share personal information with people or services against the user's wishes.
Facebook does not give advertisers access to users' personal information.
Facebook does not and never will sell any personal information to anyone.
Facebook will always be kept a free service.

No Apology

Nowhere in the OpEd does Zuckerberg come out and apologize for the actions that have brought Facebook to this point: the institution of complex, multilayered privacy settings that are difficult to navigate; the recent change in its privacy policy that permits the automatic sharing of personal information; or even the news reported in The Wall Street Journal last week that Facebook and other social networks, including MySpace, have been sending advertisers data that could be used to uncover consumers' names. When notified of the breach, Facebook said it was making changes to fix the practice.

Instead, the closest Zuckerberg comes to a mea culpa is an explanation that Facebook has to move quickly to satisfy the evolving social media connection demands of a user base of more than 400 million people and that "sometimes we move too fast."

All the Right Things

The lack of a specific apology aside, Zuckerberg's column appears to have struck a receptive chord.

"It is certainly encouraging. I am pleased at the tone, and his comments represent a change in how Facebook has responded to the concerns of its users," Leslie Harris, president and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology, told TechNewsWorld.

That these statements were made in an op-ed in The Washington Post, she added, suggests the company's commitment to them is strong.

Been There, Heard That

However, this is not the first time Zuckerberg has promised to do better with users' privacy -- and his words now carry little weight among privacy advocates, who say they'll have to see material evidence of Facebook's privacy changes before they believe in it.

Concluded Harris: "We will have to wait and see what the changes actually are before we can say that Facebook is fundamentally changing how it deals with the privacy of its users."

"The problem is, we have gone through this before -- what Mark said this morning is similar to what he said a year ago," Marc Rotenberg, executive director of Electronic Privacy Information Center, told TechNewsWorld.

The statements are also quite different from Facebook's actual practices, he said -- and those discrepancies are the foundation of the accusations EPIC and other privacy organizations have made against Facebook in a complaint recently filed with the FTC.

"We are claiming that Facebook's policy practices are unfair and deceptive, because [they don't] honor the commitments it has made," Rotenberg said.

Zuckerberg "doesn't have a lot of credibility right now," Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, told TechNewsWorld.

Although waiting to see exactly what changes will be introduced, Stephens noted that even the number of changes Facebook has made to its policies should be a red flag to consumers.

They Keep On Coming

Over its long and convoluted privacy policy history, Facebook has made several stabs at best practices, Stephens continued.

"Keeping track of their privacy policy changes is a full time job for an organization -- much less a consumer," he remarked.

Kurt Opsahl of the Electronic Frontier Foundation recently put together a time line of Facebook's privacy changes.

The long-term trend is clear, he wrote. While Facebook originally offered users simple and powerful controls over their personal information, as it grew larger and became more important, "it's slowly but surely helped itself -- and its advertising and business partners -- to more and more of its users' information, while limiting the users' options to control their own information."

The Washington Stick

There is a chance that Facebook might truly be ready to make longstanding changes, Stephens said. If it is, that's because the risk of regulatory or legislative action -- or both -- is greater now than it's ever been, and Facebook is furiously backpeddling to avoid it.

"Facebook would prefer not to be regulated," he noted, "and it is willing to make certain changes voluntarily."

There is something to that theory, Patrick Kerley, senior digital strategist at Levick Strategic Communications, told TechNewsWorld. "I don't think it is a coincidence that Facebook ran this op-ed in The Washington Post." The paper is read by many lawmakers.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has already asked the FTC to design privacy rules for social networking sites.

No matter what its motivation is, Facebook does appear to be getting serious about privacy, Rob Enderle, principal of the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. However, that doesn't mean that it won't screw up its handling of privacy again.

The problem, in Enderle's view, is that "they continue thinking like a technology company and are treating this much as they would a bug, by fixing the product or changing rules."

What Facebook needs to do, he said, is start thinking like a consumer company and focus on protecting its image -- or it will eventually start bleeding badly.

iPad Sales Boom While Netbooks Gather Dust

The iPad appears to be making significant inroads into the netbook market, based on research findings and the conclusions of a Morgan Stanley analyst, but other analysts aren't so quick to agree.

Netbook sales are no longer growing at the double-digit rates of the last few years, noted Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, who made the observation in a client note primarily focused on HP's (NYSE: HPQ) acquisition of Palm (Nasdaq: PALM).

Netbooks posted just a 5 percent year-over-year sales increase last month, Huberty reportedly wrote in the note. That compares dismally with the 600 percent jump they saw in July 2009 and the 800 percent jump in March 2009.

January 2010 was the tipping point, she said, based on data from Morgan Stanley and NPD, which reported that year-over-year netbook growth was 53 percent in February, but only 25 percent in March. In April, it dropped to 5 percent.

Those two monthly declines correlate with Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs' announcement of the iPad in January and its subsequent unveiling in April, Huberty observed.

Also bolstering her case is a Morgan Stanley/Alphawise survey conducted in March. That survey found that 44 percent of U.S. consumers who planned to buy an iPad claimed to be buying it instead of a netbook or laptop.

Doesn't Jibe

With the iPad on the market for just a month, it is difficult to draw the conclusion that its sales are having a direct impact on netbook sales, Steven Baker, VP of industry analysis for NPD, told MacNewsWorld.

Netbook sales growth is slowing, he acknowledged, but there are other, unrelated reasons for that decline.

Furthermore, the rate of decline is in question, said Baker. There were virtually no sales in 2008 due to the recession, and the fact that the netbook market was barely emerging in 2008 makes comparisons with 2009 figures deceptive.

The drop in sales growth is not unexpected, he argued, because the netbook market is naturally entering a lower-growth part of its cycle. "Sales would have leveled off even if the iPad never entered the market."

All that said, the iPad eventually will begin to erode netbooks' market share, if only because the two devices are natural competitors, Baker predicted.

Not Now, but Later?

The extent to which that will happen is still subject to much debate, Bob O'Donnell, an analyst with IDC, told MacNewsWorld.

"Certainly, there will be some people who decide on the iPad instead of the mini or netbook, but we don't think these devices are mutually exclusive. There will be some people who will own multiple devices."

Morgan Stanley's notion that the iPad has already made a dent in netbook sales is far-fetched, said O'Donnell.

"The netbook market started to slow down in terms of growth even before the iPad was ever announced," he pointed out.

This year there will be 39 million netbook units sold, according to IDC projections, he said. There were 34 million sold in 2009 and 11 million in 2008.

These projections only account for U.S. growth, he added. "We are going to see a huge growth in netbook sales in emerging markets -- huge.

There use to be many make money online scams out there, and there still are some out there you should worry about. There are also alot of agencies dedicated to stopping these scams before they get out of control.

If you ask me 10 years ago there was nothing, but make money online scams, now I'm sure some people will beg to differ, but that is just the way things are.

Back in the day, so to speak there wasn't really any laws to protect us from these make money online scams, now it is a very serious crime to spam or screw someone out of there money online.

It is pretty easy to spot a scam today, if you get an email from a royal prince in some country you never heard of, and there asking for your info so they can send you $25 million dollars to split, this should tip you off that this is a scam, some people do fall for this type of scam though

If you get an email saying you have won the foreign lottery, and all you have to do is pay $5,000 dollars to receive it, what does that tell you? SCAM!!!! Well or at least it should.

Those are two of the most popular make money online scams out there, and honestly any home business system or product I have reviewed, has never taught me how to rob people of their identities, or steal there bank account information, and if they did I definitely wouldn't say they were good.

I am not willing to destroy my business, or my integrity over a couple bucks, and I hope you wouldn't either. One of the key principles of a home business is help others first, and add as much value to your customer as you possibly can.

Web abuzz over Facebook ban in Pakistan

Islamabad: The web is abuzz over the ban on social networking site Facebook in Pakistan following the Prophet cartoon row. While some favour a clamp down, others question the blanket ban.

Webpages have sprung up on Facebook after "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" was set up.

A Pakistani court had Wednesday ordered the government to temporarily block Facebook after a controversy over a competition for caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

Pakistan has also blocked the video-sharing website YouTube because of its "growing sacrilegious contents".

A statement from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that YouTube and Facebook websites were blocked after the government failed to convince them to remove "derogatory material".

A webpage called "Ban FACEBOOK in Pakistan" has been set up "to condemn the hypocrisy of FACEBOOK. As it won't delete the hate mongering page called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!".

Izhar Khan wrote on the page: "I Quit Facebook from today...Sorry my friends....but will cath u somewhere else.. Insha-ALLAH".

But there are others who don't want a ban of facebook.

The creator of the page "Only ban the Disrespecting Group and not the facebook in Pakistan" says: "Why should everyone get punished for 1 or 2 person's mistake. Please be fair and take step to do something right so join this group and lets try and make a difference."

Protests took place across Pakistan Thursday over the Prophet's cartoon row.

In Islamabad, religious leaders issued a decree calling for the killing of the "blasphemous cartoonist" while in Rawalpindi, hundreds of activists from the women's wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) staged a protest demonstration. They demanded that the government should end economic and diplomatic relations with all those countries who are involved in it.

The protesters held placards saying, "We will accept death in slavery of Prophet (SAW), the competitors are the real terrorists", "We love our Prophet (SAW) more than our forefathers", The News International reported.

Jamiat Ulema Pakistan, Tahffuz Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz, Anti Facebook Movement, Muhammadia Students Movement, International Tanzim-e-Ahle Sunnat and Muttahida Tehrik-e-Khatum-e Nubuwat Committee demonstrated in front of the Lahore Press Club and Punjab Assembly.

The lawyers community also observed a strike on the Punjab Bar Council’s call against Facebook. The lawyers boycotted the court proceedings in civil and session courts and lawyers did not attend the court proceedings in the Lahore High Court after 10.30 a.m.

Social organisations, religious bodies and NGOs of Sialkot have announced that they would observe Friday as a protest day.

In Quetta, thousands of activists of the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulba Balochistan chapter took out a rally against the planned contest of blasphemous caricatures on Facebook, demanding the UN to take immediate notice.

Violent demonstrations had erupted in 2006 in Pakistan over the publication of cartoons on the Prophet Mohammed in Danish newspapers Jyllands-Posten and Politiken.

Last week, Pakistan refused to renew the visa of a Jyllands-Posten correspondent, forcing him to leave the country.

Google Brings an Open Source Gun to the Video Codec Battle

Google.on Thursday announced WebM, a royalty-free media file format for online video. With WebM, Google has thrown the gauntlet to H.264, the codec backed by rivals Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), among others.

Buried within the new format's FAQ was news about another Google project: Android. The next iteration of the mobile operating system, dubbed "Gingerbread," will be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

What Is WebM?

WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed for the Web. Its files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. Its file structure is based on the Matroska media container.

Vorbis is an open source audio compression technology that's an independent project of the Xiph Foundation. Matroska is a multimedia container format derived from a project called "MCF."

WebM files run on supported Web browsers or media players. Google Chromium will support WebM from Thursday, Opera Labs already supports WebM for several operating systems, and Mozilla Firefox will also support WebM files.

YouTube is supporting WebM, of course, and Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) is also backing the VP8 codec.

Brightcove has announced that one of its clients, The New York Times, will test WebM soon.

Google will release QuickTime and DirectShow plug-ins in the next few weeks that will allow many third-party encoding applications to produce WebM files. On Thursday it released a developer preview for the WebM project.

WebM versus H.264

In unveiling WebM, Google is locking horns with Apple and Microsoft, both of which support the H.264 codec. Cupertino and Redmond have suggested using H.264 and HTML5 instead of Adobe Flash for online videos. Flash, they declared, is creaky and outdated.

However, the battle's not just about the best technology. The real issue is money.

"HTML5 doesn't specify which video and audio codecs to use," Thomas Ford, a spokesperson for browser developer Opera, pointed out."That's why we have a codec war. First there was Theora, then H.264 and now there's WebM."

What's in it for the winner? Dominance of online videos, and that could involve some serious pocket change.

The H.264 codec uses patents that are owned by developer companies, including Microsoft and Apple. Users will have to pay fees to MPEG LA, a private company that administers the licenses for H.264, among others.

Google's WebM Licensing Terms

MPEG LA issues five-year licenses. In February, the company announced that it will not charge users of the H.264 codec royalties for the technology through to December 2015.

Further, there are fears that patent holders may sue users if a dispute arises.

Google may hope to undercut all these problems by making WebM a free and open source project and modifying its licensing terms. Its license is based on BSD and Apache, so licensees can use the VP8 code in both proprietary and open source software with few restrictions.

The main modification Google made to the licensing terms is that its VP8 license grants patent rights, and it terminates if patent litigation is filed alleging the code has been infringed.

"H.264 isn't a very good option because of the rights issues around it," Opera's Ford told LinuxInsider. "We can't pay a large licensing fee, and we needed a free alternative. Fortunately, Google stepped in with a free and open alternative."

Whither WebM?

Despite support for VP8 from several companies, Google may initially find it difficult to take on H.264.

"Unfortunately, VP8 isn't as good as H.264, and Apple is aggressively against it, which could be problematic given the heavy shadow Apple casts on this space," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told LinuxInsider.

However, support from Microsoft may mitigate Google's problems a bit.

"Microsoft has announced that it will build support for VP8 into Internet Explorer 9," Enderle said.

Hansel and Gretel

Rumors that Google's next version of Android will be named "Gingerbread" have been circulating on the blogosphere for months, but up until now Google has refrained from commenting on them officially.

With the unveiling of the WebM codec Thursday, Google announced that Gingerbread is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter and that this version of the operating system will support WebM.

"We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements," reads Google's WebM FAQ.

VP8 is the video codec Google acquired when it bought On2 Technologies last year. It's used to compress video streams in WebM files.

Unless they have been living in a cave somewhere then pretty much everyone has heard of sites such a Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, how could they not have? These sites are so popular that they are not only mentioned frequently in on TV shows and in movies but they have also become headline news on numerous occasions. Facebook has apparently had a hand in helping to catch several criminals and you have no doubt heard the stories of celebrities airing their opinions of one another on Twitter.

My point is this...social networking sites are HUGE hotbeds of activity; from bored housewives wanting some social interaction to celebrities wanting to connect with their fans, from teenagers wanting to chat with friends to grandmothers trying to keep up to date with their families and from musicians promoting their music to gamers sharing their MMO exploits, social networking sites cover almost every social group you can think of. Don't believe me? Try typing Amish into Facebook, last time I looked there were over 3000 fans for the Amish as a religious organisation. For a culture that doesn't allow technology that really is impressive!

So what does this have to do with making money?

With so many people gathering in one place there is no doubt going to be a way to make money from it. You can advertise your business on Facebook, this does cost money but the fact of the matter is that Facebook not only has much better audience targeting system for its advertisers but it also has MORE people visiting it than Google does!

People began advertising their products and services on Facebook fairly early on, they create pages or even whole new profiles specifically for their businesses and websites then invite people to join thus gaining free advertising. Groups are created for everything from financial advisors to ghost hunters.

And what about the applications? Facebook is rife with little browser games that give the user a few minutes of entertainment per day, people log on to check on their game and spend pretend money on decorating and buying new items. The creators of these applications can earn money from advertisements but that's not all. Not only do you have the choice of paying pretend money for you game items, you also have the option to use real money. I was stunned to find that people were joining a group that was campaigning to be able to spend MORE money on a game, when I asked why on earth you would want to spend real cash on the game I was told that a young boy had managed to ride up a £6000 bill on his mother's credit card. Most people on these social networking sites don't just play one or two games they play multiple games. Even if they are not spending real money they are still providing the application designers with a nice profit in advertising.

How do you cash in on the social networking sites?

This depends on what it is that you do. Can you design browser games for people on Facebook and MySpace? Great then crack on with it. Once you are finish pass it on to your friends and ask them to do the same, ask people to test it and tell you what they think then use the feedback to make it more appealing.

For those of you have already have a business or website that you want to promote then go ahead, make your pages, groups and profile and get people interested in what you have to offer. But don't stop there, the social media sites have wonderful integration possibilities. Not only can you keep your followers up to date by using RSS or Atom feeds, a lot of these social media sites can be connected. In most cases you can set up your accounts to update one another automatically. You post a video on YouTube and the same link is then posted on Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, etc, etc without you ever having to lift a finger!

Social networking not only gives you the ability to stay up to date on what friends and family all over the world are doing but it also gives you the opportunity to make sure that they stay up to date with you.

10+ mistakes Linux newbies make

1: Assuming they are using Windows

Although this might seem way too obvious, it’s not. The average user has no idea there are even different operating systems to be had. In fact, most average users couldn’t discern Windows XP from Vista from 7 (unless they are certain Windows 7 was “their idea”). Because of this, new users might believe that everything works (or doesn’t work, as the case may be) as it does in Windows. Make your end users aware that they are using a different operating system — and that it works differently.
2: Trying to make exe files work

Unless you have done your homework and installed WINE, double-clicking those .exe files simply won’t do anything. And when that happens, your end users are going to be upset. I have seen many an end user download an app made for Windows assuming that it will work for Linux. Make it clear to users that Linux, like Windows, will only run applications made for that operating system. This, of course, is tossed out the window when WINE is involved. But new users won’t be using WINE anyway.
3: Choosing the wrong distribution

One of the biggest problems for users is choosing the wrong distribution. Imagine being a new user and selecting Gentoo or Slackware or Fedora! Yes those are all good distributions, but any of them would send a new user running away in fear. If you are in the initial stages of helping a new user out, do yourselves both a favor and choose the distribution carefully. Consider the user’s ability, needs, and hardware before you make that selection. Don’t just jump on board Ubuntu because everyone says you should. A lot of distributions out there are made specifically for new users. Give them all a close examination before making the choice.
4: Not finding software

Because so many new Linux users are migrating from Windows, they think software can be had from the same channels. Most of the time, this is not the case. The new user needs to become familiar with their package management tools right away - especially tools like Synaptic, Packagekit, and Ubuntu Software Center. Each of those tools is a mecca of software where users can most likely find all the applications they need.
5: Sending OpenOffice documents to Microsoft Office users in the default format

I see this so often. New Linux users are proud of the strides they have made but dumbfounded (and sometimes turned back to Windows) because the people they share files with can’t read their formats. Remember, Microsoft products are not good at getting along with other operating systems and other applications. Make sure your new users are saving in file formats that are readable by the Microsoft equivalents.
6: Avoiding the command line

I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why people completely avoid the command line as if it is the most complex tool there is. I know people who can work absolute magic with Photoshop but can’t seem to type a simple rm command at the command line. Why this is I will never know. New users shouldn’t shy away from the command line. Knowing the command line isn’t essential anymore, but it will make them more capable users.
7: Giving up too quickly

Here’s another issue I see all too often. After a few hours (or a couple of days) working with Linux, new users will give up for one reason or another. I understand giving up when they realize something simply doesn’t work (such as when they MUST use a proprietary application or file format). But seeing Linux not work under average demands is rare these days. If you see new Linux users getting frustrated, try to give them a little extra guidance. Sometimes getting over that initial hump is the biggest challenge they will face.
8: Thinking the Windows directory hierarchy translates to Linux

There is no C:\ in Linux. Nor do you use the “\” character. Nor should you use spaces in filenames. These are common mistakes new users make. Trying to map out Windows to Linux, directory for directory, is impossible. You can get as far as C:\ = / and maybe Default User = ~/, but beyond that you’re out of luck. Make sure new users understand that everything starts at / and their most important directory is their home directory (aka ~/ aka /home/USERNAME/).
9: Skipping updates

I have been burned with Windows updates many times. Need I bother mentioning the update from Explorer 7 to Explorer 8? Very rarely has a Linux update fubar’d a system of mine. In fact, I can’t remember the last time it has. So I am always up to date on my systems… and with good reason. Those updates bring new security patches and features to software and should be applied. Having an installation with a security hole is not what your users need, especially on a machine that houses important information.
10: Logging in as root

I really shouldn’t have to say this. But just in case, be sure to tell your users DON’T LOG IN AS ROOT! But… just in case they must… DON’T LOG IN AS ROOT! Instead, have them open up a terminal window and either “su” to root or use “sudo”. And just in case you didn’t hear me the first time, DON’T LOG IN AS ROOT!
11: Losing windows to the pager

The pager is one of the handiest features of the Linux desktops. But over and over, I’ve seen that new users don’t quite understand what the pager is for and what it does. Because of this, they will “lose” their windows from the desktop. Where did it go? It was there a moment ago! I guess it crashed. No. More than likely, they moved it to another desktop. Another desktop? You see where this is going? Help the new user understand what the pager is and how useful it can be.
12: Ignoring security because it’s Linux

A big part of me still wants to boast and say, “In the 12 years I have used Linux, I have never once had a virus or worm or been hacked.” Although that is true, it doesn’t mean I should ignore security. I have witnessed the effects of a rootkit on a Linux machine. They aren’t pretty and data will be lost. Tell your users that they can’t ignore security just because they’re using Linux. Security is crucial, regardless of the OS.

Forget Cookies, Your Browser Has Fingerprints

Even without cookies, popular browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox give Web sites enough information to get a unique picture of their visitors about 94 percent of the time, according to research compiled over the past few months by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The research puts a quantitative assessment on something that security gurus have known about for years, said Peter Eckersley, the EFF senior staff technologist who did the research. He found that configuration information -- data on the type of browser, operating system, plugins, and even fonts installed can be compiled by Web sites to create a unique portrait of most visitors.

This means that most Internet users are a lot less anonymous than they believe, Eckersley said. "Even if you turn off cookies and you use a proxy to hide your IP address, you could still be tracked," he said.

The data doesn't actually identify the Web user, but it creates a unique browser "fingerprint," that can be used to identify the user when he visits other Web sites.

Using JavaScript, Web sites are able to probe PCs and learn a lot. No single piece of data is enough to identify the visitor on its own, but when it's all strung together -- browser version, language, operating system, time zone details -- a clearer picture emerges. Some things -- what combination of plugins and fonts are installed, for example -- can be a dead giveaway.

And using the private mode offered by some browser-makers does nothing to stop this analysis. "They provide you with some protection against other people who may be in your house or who have access to your computer, but they haven't got to the point where they've provided protection against the companies that are profiling Web users," Eckersley said.

In fact, there are already a handful of companies have already started offering this kind of cookie-less Web tracking to help e-commerce sites identify fraudsters. Companies such as 41st Parameter, ThreatMetrix, and Iovation are widely used in the banking, e-commerce and social Web sites.

And the products work. Last August, when Serbian criminals started testing stolen credit cards by posting hundreds of US$1.99 transactions to the iReel.com online movie site each day, iReel turned to ThreatMetrix to get a fix on the fraudsters.

Using similar techniques to those described by the EFF, ThreatMetrix generated digital fingerprints of site visitors, which helped iReel know when a single user was trying to use hundreds of different credit cards, even when the fraudster was using proxy IP addresses, said Adam Altman, iReel's chief operations officer. "We were able to cut out a lot of the unnecessary transactions," he said.

These products may see more widespread use as browser-makers give users more control over managing the Web-tracking cookie files on their browsers, said Avivah Litan, an analyst with Gartner. Many e-commerce sites already use so-called Flash cookies to track visitors, but Adobe is starting to give users more control over these files, so browser fingerprinting maybe the next widely used visitor tracking technology on the Web, she said.

For people who think they're anonymously surfing the Web, this is bad news, Eckersley said. "If someone can see what pages we're going to, they know what we're reading and what we're thinking," he said.

The EFF has set up a Web site that tests visitors for uniquely identifiable information. Most people are surprised to discover just how trackable they are online, Eckersley said.

There are some effective countermeasures, however. A uniquely identifiable IDG News Service Windows XP computer running Firefox could not be identified with the NoScript safe browsing extension turned on. Adding the Tor Internet anonymization software also works, Eckersley said.

Mobile browsers on the iPhone on Android platforms are often not identifiable. That's because they typically don't have the variety of browser plugins and font add-ons that are common on desktop PCs.

So could browser makers make their products more private? Eckersley believes so. "There are some situations where having some of this information is useful, but you don't need all of it by any means," he said.

Chrome, IE Browser Battle Addresses Need for Speed

On the heels of news that the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Chrome Web browser is gaining market share while Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer browser is losing ground, both companies took the wraps off faster, next-generation browsers Wednesday.

Google released a new beta of its Chrome browser which is much faster than the previous version and has several new features.

Meanwhile, Microsoft put out its second IE9 platform preview, one week ahead of schedule.

A Bruiser Beta

Speed is one of the main hallmarks of the latest Chrome browser beta, which loads Web pages at 2,700 frames per second, according to Google.

"We made some improvements to our JavaScript engine," Google spokesperson Eitan Bencuya told TechNewsWorld.

The new beta also has some HTML5 features such as geolocation application programming interfaces, an application cache, Web sockets and file drag-and-drop capabilities.

Further, it has an integrated Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) Flash Player plug-in.

Hiding Your Identity

Users of the new Chrome browser beta can synchronize bookmarks as well as browser preferences, including themes, homepages and startup settings; Web content settings; and languages. They can also install and use Chrome extensions while in incognito, or private, mode.

In incognito mode, Web pages users open or files they download are not recorded in their browsing and download histories. All new cookies are deleted after all incognito windows are closed. Changes made to Google chrome bookmarks and general settings while in incognito mode will be saved, however.

Further, incognito mode only prevents Google Chrome from storing information about websites users have visited. The websites visited may retain records of visits, and any files saved to users' computers will remain.

Microsoft Speeds Up IE9 2nd Preview

Perhaps to keep pace with Google, Microsoft unveiled the second platform preview of IE9 Wednesday -- one week ahead of schedule.

When Redmond released the first IE9 platform preview in March, it promised to issue an update every eight weeks.

"We're excited to provide developers with access to updated builds of the Internet Explorer 9 platform preview every eight weeks leading up to beta," Microsoft spokesperson Ryan Bartholomew told TechNewsWorld.

However, this second preview was released after only seven.

This second preview speeds up IE9, offers support for standards, and incorporates hardware acceleration for HTML5. It uses background compiled JavaScript for greater speed.

The preview is for developers only, Brandon LeBlanc wrote on the Windows blog .

The release schedule for the full public IE9 beta is still unknown. "Internet Explorer 9's public availability will be dependent on when it reaches the quality bar for release," he explained.

Winning Is Everything

The announcements from Microsoft and Google reflect an ongoing battle in the browser market. April statistics from NetApplications.com show that Microsoft's IE is still dominant, it continues to lose ground in the browser market. Meanwhile, Google Chrome is making sharp gains.

Overall, Internet Explorer's share of the market fell to just below 60 percent in April.

"This is a new low for IE's market share," Ray Valdes, vice president of Web services at Gartner (NYSE: IT), told TechNewsWorld.

Google Chrome is not only eating into Microsoft's turf, but it's also impacting other browsers. Take Firefox, for example: It ranked second in the browser market, with a 25 percent share. That share may well have been bigger if it hadn't been for Google Chrome.

"Firefox's growth rate has slowed a lot recently, due to strong uptake by Google Chrome," Valdes pointed out.

While Google Chrome is fast, speed isn't the only factor boosting its growth in the market, he said.

"Google Chrome is growing share more rapidly than any of the other browsers for several reasons," Valdes stated. "It has impressive speed, provides a good user experience, and perhaps most importantly, it's leveraging the Google brand and distribution channels -- it has a prominent link on the Google home page.

Microsoft Gives OEMs Embedded Win 7 to Tinker With

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has given manufacturers the tools to make Windows the operating system for a host of consumer-oriented devices -- from video game consoles to TV set-top boxes that serve as full-blown home entertainment centers. It's not clear, however, exactly when consumers will be able to purchase these devices.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 is the proposed platform. Microsoft announced the release of a "componentized and customizable" version of the operating system to equipment manufacturers at the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley, taking place this week in San Jose, Calif.

Home Entertainment

Adding Windows Media Center to Windows Embedded Standard 7 will drive growth in the home entertainment market by allowing both OEMs and service providers, such as cable and satellite TV companies, to "explore additional revenue streams by providing unique content through a central media hub in the home," said Kevin Dallas, general manager of the Windows embedded unit at Microsoft.

Windows Media Center -- which allows users to create libraries of music, video and other forms of media from multiple sources, including the Internet -- is a standard feature in most PC-based versions of Windows 7.

It appears that consumers, indeed, have an appetite for devices that offer wide access to various forms of content. They spent roughly US$74 billion on connected media devices such as game consoles, TVs and set-top boxes in 2009, according to ABI Research, and the firm expects that figure to reach $94 billion in 2010.

The economic downturn slowed consumer spending on core home networking devices, such as routers and gateways for home WiFi networks, ABI noted.

Consumers' desire to distribute audio and video around the home and access online content through their televisions is the main driver of growth in the connected media space, according to the firm.

With a market showing healthy growth in the face of a severe recession, it's not surprising that Microsoft would tout the potential for Windows Embedded Standard 7 to be a force in this sector.

Digital Signage

However, most of the manufacturers that Microsoft has identified as having immediate plans to ship products containing the new operating system are in other markets. For instance, it said HP (NYSE: HPQ) and Wyse Technology will use Windows Embedded Standard 7 as a thin-client user interface. It also mentioned several companies that plan to use it as a platform for running new digital signage appliances.

Microsoft and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) will unveil a platform they codeveloped for this market at the upcoming Screen Media Expo, to be held in London in early May, Dallas said.

"We will be debuting two new digital signage appliances based on Windows Embedded Standard 7 at Screen Media Expo," Gabrielle Marshall, marketing manager for DT Research, told TechNewsWorld. "We have been using Windows Vista for our appliances, and it has worked well, but we expect Windows Embedded Standard 7 to be even better."

Specifically, Marshall said, DT Research engineers expect a new video rendering module in Window Embedded Standard 7 to improve the quality of 3-D graphics and provide faster video playback on the company's digital signs, which are used in places like airports, train stations and restaurants.

The new operating system also will allow for updating the information flashed on signs faster, she noted, in addition to offering enhanced security and faster recovery after power interruptions.

As to when devices powered by Windows Embedded Standard 7 might reach the home entertainment space, Ashwin Kulkarni, senior product manager Window Embedded, told TechNewsWorld the company was "actively working with several OEMs to deliver set-top boxes, TVs and other connected media devices built on Windows Embedded Standard 7." Everyone has been 'buzzing' around the new social media platform launched by Google recently - Google Buzz. There is nothing outstanding about the layout - it's a sort of Twitter meets FriendFeed design. The major difference (and advantage) Buzz has over the existent social networks is that it is integrated into your Gmail account. There are many other interesting features which have been discussed in much detail across the internet, hence in this article I will just concentrate on SEO implications of Google Buzz.

For Search Engine Optimizers, the two interesting aspects of Google Buzz are:

The 'implicit' priority that Google Buzz will get on the Google Search Engine
The 'auto-following' - you can leverage Gmail to grow your social network more rapidly (compared with Twitter) since Buzz has a built-in viral feature by auto-following contacts

For the past few years, Google has moving towards a trend know as 'real-time' or 'blended' search. On your search result page you won't only see organic (free results) and sponsored ads but also images, video, Twitter, MySpace and news posts (all as it happens). The opportunities for SEO here are:

Google may interpret links from these posts to your website as having some marginal impact on your PageRank.
People may read your tweets, news posts and thereby directly o to your website

I may be speculating here but I believe that Google Buzz might get a slight advantage when it comes to 'real-time' search, after all its Google's baby.

Or look at it this way - Google is in all ways the dominating Search Engine - a huge monopoly, huge profits to link products to attractive packages and important products to give away for free. Buzz is already linked to Gmail and Google says that public Buzz will be indexed on Google search engines (have a look at the launch video). Google is also indexing Twitter posts; all of this encourages an SEO to see Buzz as a powerful tool.

Also take a look at YouTube, video posts on Google are heavily biased towards it with respect to other alternative video services. Not really sure if Buzz will outrank Twitter but there is a vast opportunity to be exploited from an SEO perspective.

Another important point is that you can get a real link from Google.com Many SEO people still like to get links, especially from an authority domain. All your buzzes are extra pages with their own clean URL. The links don't use the infamous no-follow attribute that makes them useless for search engines.

I believe Google Buzz has a vast opportunity that can be exploited by search engine optimizers. So buzz your way around!

Twitter's Forced-Follow Flaw Fix Purges Users' Fan Files

Twitter has stomped out a bug that for a brief period allowed users to force other users to follow them on the microblogging site. In eliminating the glitch, however, Twitter emptied out some users' list of followers entirely.

"Like other social networks, Twitter was originally designed to serve a pretty small community, and when it grew so big, funny things were bound to happen," Yankee Group analyst Carl Howe told TechNewsWorld.

Twitter's real-time nature exacerbates the problem. "Maintaining a real-time site is like changing the engine in your car when you're going down the freeway at 60 miles an hour," Howe explained.

You Will Be My Friend

The bug, which struck over the weekend, let users unilaterally decide to add anyone they wanted as followers. This was a reversal of Twitter's normal approach, in which the decision to "follow" someone -- to see that person's tweets as they're posted -- is left up to the follower, not the followee. In some cases the person being followed may need to also grant permission.

Twitter on Monday announced that it had resolved the problem. However, it was rolling out the solution in stages, so users who were still being forced to follow others unwillingly had to block or unfollow them, it said.

In addition, the solution deleted some Twitter users' followers. Several celebrities, including Ashton Kuchter, Demi Moore and teen star Justin Bieber, complained about losing their followers.

"Twitter is being hacked by some Turkish hacker," Kuchter wrote on the microblogging site. "Haha I have 0 followers. Whew! There's an update from Twitter, 'Missing relationships are being restored'."

"Hackers, I send a warning -- U have now p**ssed off over two million teenage girls. They are more dangerous than Navy Seals," Bieber wrote.

Twitter's Woes

The "follow" bug that surfaced over the weekend was the third problem to hit Twitter in less than two weeks. On April 26, outbound emails were delayed for up to five hours. However, no tweets were lost.

"Twitter is one of the more fragile of the social networks, because it was originally designed to do a set of things and do them very well, and it's morphed into this giant website and so had to go through a lot of changes," Howe, who's director of anywhere consumer research at the Yankee Group, pointed out.

The forced following flaw was probably caused by a programmer taking "a couple of shortcuts" before implementing Twitter's "accept" feature, which governs followers, Howe said. (NYSE: HPQ) has announced a spring product rollout that includes 14 notebooks powered by AMD (NYSE: AMD). The PCs span all user categories from enterprise to consumer.

Although Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) does have a presence, AMD is the star of the show. This is "the largest single introduction of HP and AMD notebooks on one day," said Mike Hockey, spokesperson for HP business notebooks, HP personal systems group.

The new laptops use AMD's Vision and Vision Pro technology. The Vision Pro technology features the AMD Phenom II, AMD Turion II, AMD Athlon and AMD V-Series chips.

The new laptops incorporating AMD Phenom II Dual-Core 620 processors are 69 percent faster than HP notebooks with previous-generation AMD GPUs, according to HP.

Consumer Lines

The displays on the Envy 14, which starts at US$999 and will be available June 27, are "75 percent brighter than any notebook in its class," claimed Barry Ferris, product marketing manager with HP's personal systems group.

Despite the heavy reliance on AMD in the latest round of notebooks, Intel wasn't absent. HP announced four new Pavilions (the dm4, dv5, dv6 and dv7) that offer a choice of Intel or AMD processors.

HP targeted audio improvements in the Pavilion line, noted Giovanni Sena, also a product marketing manager for HP's personal systems group. The Pavilion units pair Altec Lansing speakers with Dolby advanced sound.

HP also updated its consumer line of Envy, Mini and Pavilion notebooks with an emphasis on its MUSE (materials, usability, sensory appeal and experiences) design. Customers can choose from 15 wallpaper backgrounds, including those by artists such as Julie West.

"There was a lawsuit by AMD and separate investigations by the government about what Intel may or may not have been doing to decrease competition for CPUs," Gillett told TechNewsWorld. "Intel settled a lawsuit earlier this year and agreed to new standards of behaviors, and this is the first set of product announcements we've seen out of HP since then."

This release of HP products is important due to its emphasis on discrete ATI Mobility Radeon graphics, Gillett said. Boosting the ability to handle and share video means "more effort and more cost," but "clearly, they believe more customers are interested in that."

"It's also telling that their emphasis was on battery life -- that the competition was less about the performance of the CPU and more about the battery life of the system," Gillett said.
